The exhibition

From 30 September to 16 November 2025, the Research Studio of the St Andrews Wardlaw Museum, a historic and vibrant space at the heart of the university, will host Divine Summits: The Cultural Lives of Mediterranean Mountains.

The exhibition invites visitors on a journey through the mountains of yesterday and today, exploring how they and our relationship with nature have evolved over time. You will find posters showcasing carefully selected summits, objects from the Archaic and Byzantine periods, a short documentary featuring the insights of professors, and photos shared with us by the wider St Andrews community.

This project is the result of nearly a year of work, bringing together the School of Classics, the Museum, and many talented students and professors from across the university. We are thrilled with what has been created and can’t wait for you to experience the exhibition, explore the mountains through our eyes, and share in the stories, objects, and memories that have inspired it.

Mountains are not stadiums where I satisfy my ambition to arrive. They are cathedrals, grand and pure, the temples of my religion.
